About Careers in Computer Engineering

There are computer engineering careers in business, social services, manufacturing, and health care. Computer engineers design and develop computer hardware from microprocessors to peripheral devices such as sound cards to complete systems such as personal computers and Internet servers.

They developoperating systems, compilers, network software,  systems to control devices such as DVD players, application software, and also are involved in Web development and design. Microelectronics is a basic technology used in computers, consumer electronics, and communication systems such as cell phones. There is an increased demand for computer engineers to embed computers in cell phones, automobiles and other consumer devices. Computer Engineering is fundamental to wireless communication systems. Wireless networks link communication devices such as cell phones (with Internet and e-mail capability), personal digital assistants, notebook, desktop, global position systems, and medical monitors. Wireless devices are proliferating and expanding in their capability to work with voice, video, and data. These devices are becoming smaller, more portable, and personalized to specialized needs. The following is a short list of computer engineering careers.
  • Computer Design and Engineering -- Design new computer circuits, microchips, and other electronic components.
  • Design digital communications equipment such as modem, cellular phones and embedded computers in video games, appliances and automobiles.
  • Develop data compression and transmission technology used on the Internet and network applications.
  • Develop robotic manufacturing systems for the automobile industry
  • Design antennas for cellular communication systems
  • Computer Architecture -- Design new computer instruction sets, and combine electronic or optical components to provide powerful and cost-effective computing.
  • Information Technology -- Develop and manage information systems that support a business or organization.
  • Software Design Engineering -- Develop methods for the production of software systems on time, within budget, and with few or no defects.
  • Computer Theory -- Investigate the fundamental theories of how computers solve problems, and apply the results to other computing areas.
  • Operating Systems and Networks -- Develop the basic software computers use to operate or communicate with other computers.
  • Software Applications -- Apply computing and technology to solving problems outside the computer field - in education or medicine, for example.

The computer has become essential at all levels of the economy. New applications for computers will only continue to grow. This demand provides an excellent opportunity
